Mood:

Well, I've been trying to relax this weekend.  I must say that I'm feeling pretty good after a Saturday of doing nothing.

Friday, I took the kids to see Yu-Gi-Oh and they loved it.  The theatre was packed with kids and teenagers and everyone seemed to enjoy the movie (definitely one for fans of the show).  I wonder what kind of box office the movie will have.  Although I must admit that if the voiceover in the movie had said "5000 years ago" one more time I would have screamed.

Anyway, it is a little past midnight and I'm going to call it a night soon.   I was just doing a little house-cleaning on the site.  It is amazing how many little typos are all over the place.  Anyway, Google is being kind to my site, while Yahoo, despite visits from the slurp everyday, sends me very little traffic.  Oh well, at least my placement on Google for various pages seems to be improving, which is good I guess.  I need to finish up some pages and add some more 'content' to keep things on an upward swing.

Mood:

Not much has been going on.  I've just been working on my proposal and a couple of other papers.  Hopefully, I can propose by September or October.

8/01/04

Mood:

Well, I've been playing catch up this weekend.  There are several papers and applications that I want to finish up before the summer ends.  If I keep a steady pace for the next couple weeks, I should have everything done.  Plus, I need to do some course prep work for the fall semester.  But, I'm hoping I'll be able to relax for a week somewhere towards the end of August......

Mood:

Since when did "shove it," become profanity.  Give me a break.  I was watching CNN tonight and they referred to Teresa Heinz Kerry's use of the phrase "shove it" to a reporter as "profane language."  They compared her words as akin to Dick Cheney's use of the f-bomb on the senate floor.  Now, the reporter is whining because Heinz Kerry said, "shove it."  boo hoo....pass the kleenex....

(7/24/04)  Now she's been deemed a "loose cannon" by USA Today.  Since when are individuals not allowed to speak their minds.  She was obviously pretty upset by the exchange with the reporter.  If anything, her outburst (if you can call it that) was pretty lame and relatively mild.

Mood:

The weekend is upon us and the talk of the town today was George Bush and Iraq.  People were talking (arguing) about him everywhere I went today.  Some people were even angry with former President Clinton and were blaming him for the war. Everyone seems to have an opinion about Bush and Iraq.  It was interesting to watch how passionate people became when discussing this topic.

The new hot spots of my website seem to be my Detroit page and the Jenna and Barbara Bush Photo Gallery.  The Detroit page attracts folks looking for festival information.  I made the Jenna and Barbara page because everyone who happened upon my George Bush funny photo page had been looking for pictures of Jenna and Barbara, so I figured I might as well give the people what they want.

I made some changes to the Free Classic Books Download page and hopefully it is more user-friendly.  Since I've begun to have traffic, I feel compelled to make the site better.  There are enough little details to keep even someone as anal as me, busy.  Plus, typos are such a problem.  It is hard to see my own mistakes but I try to make little edit changes every other day or so.

As far as the weekend, I will probably hang out with the kids.  Maybe, we will check out a movie or go to the festival at Hart Plaza.  I'm not sure what we're going to do but as long as we get out for a bit, it will be cool.

Mood:

Well, as usual not too much is going on but that's alright.  I've just been trying to lay low, and stay out of trouble.

This week I've begun collecting pilot data for my dissertation.  I should have all my pilot data by the end of the summer, so maybe I can think about proposing in September.   Other than that, I've just been working on the little details of my project.

7/14/04

Mood:

I'm more than halfway done with my teaching assignment.  The students and I have been going over the metric system, so I decided to make a page about it (check it out.)

Not much else is going on right now.  I've just been working on my dissertation and this site.  Too much excitement, I know but I'm not complaining.....

7/09/04

Mood:

Well, it's finally Friday.  (Is that supposed to mean something?  I often wonder about that.)  Anyway, I'm so tired (as usual).  I have a pretty busy week coming up so I better take it easy this weekend.  I have to teach a group of incoming freshman from 9:30 to 4:30 every day next week.  A bit intense for someone who is definitely not used to a 9-5 schedule at all.  But you do or rather, adjust as circumstances require.  Actually, I taught this program last year and it was a pretty good experience.  I had a nice group of kids.  I will definitely have to take my vitamins or something to perk up, so I'm not some boring deadbeat graduate student.

7/07/04

Mood:

Nothing new to report.  I've just been working on my proposal (blah, blah, blah).

I made a new Bush Photo Gallery which features funny photos and Bushisms.  I've also been tinkering with some of the little details of the site design. (see site index)

Plus, I added a mood component to each journal entry.

7/03/04 Well, I've archived the old stuff and I am starting this new page....Let's see if I can come up with anything interesting to talk about.......(yeah right).   Anyways, not much has been going on lately--same ole thing.....I did get full board approval for my dissertation project, so now I can begin collecting my pilot data....one step closer to the PhD.....

I saw Spiderman 2 yesterday, and it was really really good....I highly recommend it....I may even see it again if I can fit it into the budget....;-)

Happy Fourth of July!!

6/24/04 Well, I've spent my evening trying to get Frontpage to cooperate.  I've finally gotten everything published to the site as it should be except for one page, which won't publish properly, no matter what I do (ok I finally got it to work).....%@#$*

As far as my dissertation, I've finished my first draft of my proposal and I have provisional IRB approval for my project.  So things are rolling along.....

6/15/04 They said it couldn't be done but the Pistons got it done in 5.  The Pistons annihilated the Lakers.....They played team basketball and showed that hard work and determination does pay off.....

Congratulations to the Detroit Pistons for winning the 2004 NBA finals......

6/10/04 The Pistons totally rock....can't wait until Sunday's game and then Tuesday ;-)

6/9/04 Well not much has been going on.....

I've been trying to make a dent in my proposal.  It seems like the more I get done, the more there is to do.  I'm up to about 27 pages of text.  At this point, I think another 15 to 20 pages should enable me to get my point across.  My main concern is remaining consistent throughout the paper.  I've changed my mind on a few issues and need to be certain that the changes are reflected throughout.  I'm planning to have my first draft done by Monday....... I am ultimate party girl, I know......

I made a new fansite for the Pistons.  Check it out....

6/2/04 What is the world coming to when kids have to send letters and sign petitions to be able to buy modest clothes, in other words, "kid" clothes.....

From AP wire:

During a recent shopping trip to Nordstrom, 11-year-old Ella Gunderson became frustrated with all the low-cut hip-huggers and skintight tops. So she wrote to the Seattle-based chain's executives to complain. The industry has been getting the message: A more modest look is in, fashion experts say.......In 2002, a group of Arizona teens submitted a petition to the Phoenix division of the Dillard's department store chain asking for more modest clothes. The chain began carrying more conservative styles. Nordstrom spokeswoman Deniz Anders said the company has been hearing for about two years from customers who want more modest looks, and Nordstrom tries to carry a broad array of styles in its stores. The arrival of the modest look is good news for Ella......

6/1/04 I came across this very interesting site [snopes.com--Stranded at the Airport]  today, which features the story of a man who has lived in a French airport terminal since 1988.  Tom Hanks is starring in an upcoming movie based loosely on this man's story [The Terminal].

Another cool site features the real-life story behind the disturbing movie Heavenly Creatures (1994) directed by Peter Jackson of Lord of the Rings trilogy is Fourth World--The Heavenly Creatures Website.

5/27/04 Well, I made the deadline for IRB today....just barely, but I did do it.  I crammed into 3 days about a month of work.  Now I feel pretty good about it.  Just one less thing that I have to do--edging closer to my goal..... I will probably have to do amendments but at least the process has started......

On another note, I thought this picture of President Bush was pretty funny.....and to think this man is running our country......scary.........

president bush laughing......

5/18/04 One word---fatigue....I need to sleep.....

5/16/04 Well, my computer has given me nothing but grief all weekend......Nothing is working the way that it should.....I am having so many problems trying to publish my site with FrontPage.......

Oh well, on the bright side, it looks like my web-site now has traffic.  I'm kind of excited.  I've never had this level of traffic before.....The favorite spots seem to be Cher's photo gallery and the email etiquette page......hmmmmm......

And oh yeah, about that dissertation that I have been working on.....I've completed a first draft of my method section.......Any progress is good......

5/12/04 .......................;-)

5/9/04 It's been awhile since I've posted anything.....  Not much has been going on.   I've been trying to make a dent in my dissertation proposal.  I hope to have a draft by the end of the month.....I guess we'll see what happens with that.....  As far as the site goes, I'll try to make some updates tonight.... I'm going to have to come up with a plan of how best to add all the stuff I would like to and how to keep it up to date.....

Anyway, the kids and I saw Van Helsing yesterday--not the best movie ever, but not the worse either.....

4/26/04 The semester is finally over.  (whew)  I never have to take another class again in my life.  I'm finally ABD.  Now I need to focus on becoming PhD.  (There's always something.)   I think that I'm probably just going to sleep for the next few days and do a little bit of nothing.  Although I do have a meeting early tomorrow morning at 8:00.  Who schedules anything at 8:00?  Oh well, so much for sleeping.  Anyway knowing how truly anal that I am, I will probably start working on my dissertation tomorrow afternoon......Maybe I can update this site a bit too.....

4/11/04 So much for sex, drugs, and rock n' roll.....I've had a weekend full of doing homework, playing Uno with the kids and watching  a mini movie marathon.....This semester is the last time I have to take classes (oh yeah) but I need to finish up a few presentations and papers (ugh).....I'm making some progress but nevertheless it all has to be done by the 26th, so by then 'bye-bye homework'.....I bought a pack of Uno cards this weekend....At first, my kids were less than enthusiastic about the whole idea.....I mean no links or graphics....what kind of game could that be....Well, anyway, once we played, they really loved it and now they want to play it every night.  I need to get off here soon, so that we can get a few games in.....Finally, movie marathon.....not the greatest batch of movies, but Pitch Black turned out to be really good....I was so surprised......I'm watching Open Range now (fingers crossed but already seems a little boring but it's just the credits, guess I should wait before I pass judgment....)

4/5/04 I finally made it to a movie theatre.  I saw my first movie of the year--Hellboy Hellboy, you say.  Well, I wanted to see something that wouldn't be gory (e.g. The Passion) or sad (e.g. Jersey Girl).  I just wanted to have a good time at the theatre and Hellboy delivered.  It was funny, had some nice action and a little romance was thrown in.  What more could you possibly ask for?  Well, I guess you could always ask for more, but I've learned to take what you can get and run.  ;-)

Not much else is going on--just trying to narrow down the selections for my dissertation committee.....I know, it's an oh, sooo exciting life I lead....

Anyways, Thursday is my daughter's big day--she will be 13.  I WILL BE THE MOTHER OF A TEENAGER (sorry for shouting....just felt right)......

3/31/2004 I passed...... (YAY)

3/24/2004 Well, all I can say about quals is that 'hey, it's over.'  I don't feel too bad about the whole thing but the uncertainty of it all is driving me a little bonkers.  (Click here to see my questions--day one & day two--scanned copies.)  I won't find out how I did until April 2.  Until then, I just have to stew a bit.  In the meantime, I have plenty to keep myself busy......

As far as this site, I hope to begin doing some updates in the movie [updates made] and music sections within the next week or so.  I saw 'Battlefield Earth' yesterday....what a stinker!!!  Ha ha...it was soooooo bad yet funny.  I can't recall ever seeing anything so utterly ridiculous.  Forest Whitaker....wow...his performance was just....I don't know if words can describe it.....but I'll be nice (for once) and leave it alone.....

And just a note to academics everywhere---common courtesy is beautiful thing......

3/15/2004 Well, I got through day one of my qualifying exam.  I'm not sure how I did.  It's a toss-up.  At the very least my worst nightmare was not realized--seeing the exam questions and not being able to write anything.  I was able to provide some form of answer--just have to wait and see if it's enough.   Anyway, I get to repeat this whole process on Wed (oh joy).......

3/12/2004 I've had a pretty busy week.   My son's b-day was on Monday and I've been doing some last minute studying.  The long wait appears to be over.....wish me luck....

3/3/2004 Well, after saying I wouldn't be working on this site for awhile, I find myself here updating stuff (mostly in the movie section).....just can't seem to stay away.  I guess I must be feeling much better about my impending exam.  It may have something to do with the incredible weather we've had for the last week or so.  It's like spring and I feel a little restless.  Unfortunately, in a city like Detroit, there's not a lot to do, especially if you don't want to go to a casino or out to dinner.  I am looking forward to baseball season though.  I can't wait to see Pudge as a Tiger.  I'm also hoping to catch the Yankees' visit to D-town.  Last year, I missed the Yankees.  I was so pissed.  I mean, I never go anywhere, and the one weekend out of the year that I'm out of town the Yankees show up--a real bummer.  Well, the Yankees, both A-Rod and Jeter (be still my heart) are slated to come to town, July 15-18....maybe I will make it this year.

3/1/2004 It's so funny that after the Janet Jackson fiasco at the Super Bowl, critics are complaining that the Oscars were predictable, boring, and lacking the spontaneity that would even require a five-second delay......

2/29/2004 Well, I think the anxiety has kicked in.  There's so much material.....not much time left.....If I knew what I would be asked, it wouldn't be so bad....but it's a crapshoot....

'do ya feel lucky, punk...well, do ya'

2/28/2004 It probably wasn't a good idea trying to work on this website, while I'm also trying to study for quals.  Oh well, whoever said I was any good at decision making.....  ;-)

I am going to scale back this website project until after I take my qualifying exam.  Pretty much, it will be as is, until after March 17....I will try to update this page every couple days with one or two rambling thoughts.  (View my progress so far,  movies.donyell.net, music.donyell.net, freedownloads.donyell.net)

Anyway, 16 days until the first day of my exam.  I'm not quite ready yet....but I will be relieved when the whole thing is over.  (pass, pass, pass....) I'm starting to stress about it a little, though.....   Although I have my dissertation proposal outlined and ready to go...everything is in limbo until I can successfully complete this task....do or die time.....

2/25/2004 Well...it's the 25th and I'm still not done....new target date is 3/1/04.....I guess we'll see how that works out.....

I was in the med school the other day for a meeting....and I was amused by posting of bathroom rules.....although I must concede that the bathroom was very, very clean......

2/18/2004 I asked my son today if his life revolved around playstation....and he said no, there's gamecube....

2/17/2004 Well, the life of a graduate student is pretty mundane.  Read a lot of stuff, write a lot of stuff, put up with a lot of stuff......

I'm in my fifth year and am getting ready for my qualifying exam in March.  Wow, only a month away.  I am a little nervous but I will be so relieved when it's all over.  I just need to pass the darn thing.  I plan to but we shall see.....

2/16/2004 Hello, and welcome to my blog.  I'm not exactly sure what the focus will be.  I think I will just let it flow and whatever comes up, will just spill out.

As far as finishing this site, it has turned into a real monster.  I'm going to focus on a few sections--movies, music and downloads, all of which should be completed by the 25th.  After I get those done, I will move on to my other planned ventures--computers, election, homeschooling, parenting, psychology and webresearch.  I guess I also need to work on the WSU and Detroit portions of my website as well, which I hope to get done by the 25th as well.
